These services offer specialised knowledge and skills regarding LGBTI health. They can be used by mainstream services in a number of ways.

Shared care

Several specialist services encourage shared care with mainstream services. For example, the Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Clinic, Southern Health Gender Clinic and the Alfred Hospital HIV Unit will initiate treatment and handover to primary care services for monitoring.

Secondary consultation

Some specialist services are available to refer people who are LGBTI for secondary consultation to answer specific questions. For example, Melbourne Sexual Health Centre will test and treat specific STIs and then refer back to the original provider. Secondary consultation for rural and regional patients with urban specialists may be possible using telehealth.

Referral

Some LGBTI patients require specific advocacy and support, so referral to targeted LGBTI services for specific population groups is important.

Professional development

Mainstream services can access LGBTI specific information and training through Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria (information clearinghouse and inclusive practice training) and Val’s Café (aged care training).
