Summary

This document provides advice on the use and disposal of smoke detectors in Victoria. There are two main types of smoke detector – ionisation chamber detectors (which contain a small amount of radioactive material) and photoelectric detectors. Both ionisation chamber and photoelectric smoke detectors meet the requirements of Australian Standard 3786 and are permitted in Victoria.
