The Department of Health & Human Services is committed to working with alcohol and drug services, people with alcohol and drug addiction, their families and significant others in order to develop policies and frameworks that improve outcomes for Victorians. These policies guide improvements in the way services are delivered and ensure Victorians are able to access services when they need it.

Research plays an important role in informing government policy. That is why the department funds alcohol- and drug-related research to assess changing patterns of drug use and trends. Research projects are funded to build a more effective and evidence-based treatment service system in response to drug use patterns. Some data sets are also used as early-warning surveillance for rapid increases in use of particular drug types.

Legislation provides a governing framework to strengthen alcohol and drug policy in areas where significant harm to individuals can occur.
