The Department of Health and Human Services (the department) runs regular training sessions and provides online resources for skill building in governance, leadership, risk management and more.

Board Director Induction Training Webinar Series 2020

The department is hosting a series of webinars for new and reappointed directors to the boards of public health services and public hospitals. Three webinars are being held during July - September.

The first webinar was held on 22 July facilitated by Dr Joanna Flynn, Chair of the Boards Ministerial Advisory Committee, with presentations by Mr Terry Symonds, Deputy Secretary, Health and Wellbeing, and Prof. Euan Wallace, CEO, Safer Care Victoria

The second webinar on Legal Responsibilities and Risks was held on 27 August and was again facilitated by Dr Joanna Flynn, Chair of the Boards Ministerial Advisory Committee. Presentations were made by Mr Jared Heath of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, legal consultant to the DHHS General Counsel, and Mr Michael Gorton AM, Chairperson of Alfred Health and principal of Russell Kennedy Lawyers.

Health system and governance induction training 2019

The department hosting a face to face seminar for health system and governance induction in October 2019. This two-hour session covered board governance and service funding. The presentation slides and recording are available below:

    2018 Forum - Preventing and managing inappropriate behaviours in healthcare

    The department hosted a forum titled 'Preventing and managing inappropriate behaviours in healthcare: Board chairperson, director, and CEO roles in positive culture and complaints management' on 23 August 2018 at Etihad Stadium.

    The forum was well attended, with over 200 people attending in person and via live webcast on the day.

    The forum was designed to strengthen the understanding of how to manage inappropriate conduct in the workplace, for board chairpersons, directors and CEOs. Download the day's agenda and two presentations.

    Risk management workshop for board members  

    The Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) provides training for board directors designed to build skills in applying risk management principles.

    Due to physical distancing restrictions necessitated by the emergence of COVID-19 the VMIA has paused its face-to-face client learning program but continues to provide online learning resources.
