The National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards were developed to drive the implementation and use of safety and quality systems and to improve the quality of health service provision in Australia. The second edition was released November 2017. Health Services will be assessed against these standards from January 2019.
In the second edition Standard 7 has been renamed the Blood Management standard focussing on patients who need blood management as part of their care, as well as blood and blood products.
The intention of this standard is to identify risks, put in place strategies, to ensure that a patient’s own blood is optimised and conserved, and that any blood or blood products the patient receives are appropriate and safe.
There are many tools and resources available to help health services to meet NSQHS Blood Management Standard and these are listed according to the Criteria of the Standard:
- Clinical governance and quality improvement to support blood management
- Prescribing and clinical use of blood and blood products
- Managing the availability and safety of blood and blood products
