Registered private hospitals and day procedure centres in Victoria must comply with minimum regulations for patient and safety and care.
There are processes to:
- register a private hospital or a day procedure centre
- renew, vary or transfer a registration
- build or renovate a private hospital or day procedure centre.
Legislation covering private hospitals
The requirements for the safety and quality of patient care in Victoria’s private health facilities are set out in the Health Services Act 1988 and the Health Services (Private Hospitals and Day Procedure Centres) Regulations 2013.
Proprietors and developers need to make sure they understand their legal obligations and how to meet the standards set out in the Act and the Regulations.
This Framework describes the risk based regulatory approach used by the department in regulating registered Victorian private hospitals and day procedure centres, including information on regulatory compliance, the risk assessment process and tools used by the department, and regulatory activity.
