The Endovascular clot retrieval for acute stroke, statewide service protocol for Victoria guides the service provision for all suspected stroke patients in the state to enable timely and appropriate evidence-based acute stroke care.
The service protocol builds on previous work described in the Framework for regional acute stroke services in Victoria.
The recommendations in both documents refer to metropolitan and regional stroke services. They provide direction for hospital transfers and acute clinical care to ensure all Victorians receive evidence-based stroke care.
The recommendations require health services to review their standard of acute stroke care in the context of evidence-based practice and to collaborate with other health services within their region and in metropolitan Melbourne. A number of region-specific frameworks for acute stroke care have been completed; some are under development or are being updated.
