  • Anyone selling a radiation source must have a management licence with authorisation to sell.
  • A customer buying a radiation source must provide evidence that they either have a management licence or have an exemption.
  • Radiation sources must meet relevant standards and/or be approved for use in Australia.

The Radiation Act 2005 protects people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation. A licensing framework regulates the conduct of radiation practices and the use of radiation sources.

Anyone who conducts a radiation practice must hold a management licence (unless exempted from that requirement). The management licence holder must comply with every condition of their licence.

Management licences that authorise the sale of radiation sources include a condition that requires the licence holder to meet the requirements described in Sale of radiation sources – management licence holders obligations.

These conditions can be downloaded.
