The Drug rehabilitation plan builds on the Victorian Government’s Ice action plan to tackle drug problems in Victoria and meet growing demand for treatment.
It provides $87 million to continue to address drug harms, including 100 new rehabilitation beds, trialling a medically supervised injecting centre and boosting training in the alcohol and other drug workforce.
The plan includes:
- 100 additional residential rehabilitation beds to treat up to 400 extra people each year
- trial of a new 28 day rapid withdrawal and rehabilitation model to stabilise an extra 100 complex clients a year and reduce hospital readmissions
- more practical support and brokerage for people and families trying to urgently locate drug treatment services
- a trial of a medically supervised injecting room at North Richmond Community Health to save lives
- workforce training initiatives to boost the number of alcohol and other drug workers
- work to address the issue of poor quality, unsafe private drug and alcohol treatment
- new measures to target drug dealers, including those involved in organised crime.
The Victorian Government is supporting the alcohol and other drug sector to deliver these expanded services, with a strategy underway to help grow the workforce and increase capabilities.
