Health and medical research

Find out about health and medical research support, clinical trials, and the Human Research Ethics Committee's role for ethical oversight.

Health and medical research helps us to identify effective, evidence-based ways to deliver better health outcomes. Research takes place in a complex ecosystem involving health services, universities, medical research institutes, government, and industry.

We aim to improve the health and wellbeing of Victorians by supporting research aligned to our translational research priorities and principles. We want to support and partner with researchers and health services to translate research findings into policy and practice that will improve population and public health, and our healthcare system.

We support health services and academic partners to undertake research through investment, facilitating access to data and systems, and creating links to policy and program areas. We maintain a focus on reducing health inequities and translating research into policy and practice, enabling more Victorians to lead healthier lives.

Conduct research involving the department

The Centre for Evaluation and Research Evidence (CERE)External Link oversees the external research application process facilitating connections between the researchers and relevant representatives (the sponsors) from specialist departmental program and policy areas. The purpose of the sponsors is to facilitate researchers' access to departmental resources and to support research translation to policy and practice.

For a comprehensive guide to the CERE external research application process, see Research applications for external organisationsExternal Link and individuals on the Department of Family Fairness and Housing website.

If you require any assistance or guidance, please email the CERE team at cere@health.vic.gov.au.
