Advanced practice roles take advantage of senior nursing and allied health professionals’ skills to expand the options for health service provision, as well as enabling development of additional pathways to health careers and leadership opportunities for nursing and allied health clinicians.
Advanced allied health roles use senior allied health clinicians to expand the range of activities undertaken by allied health professionals. There are a number of new contemporary allied health role projects underway including in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, exercise physiology, continence, and pharmacy.
- Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy roles - Advanced practice musculoskeletal physiotherapy roles have been implemented across twelve health services in Victoria in post arthroplasty review clinics, emergency departments and neurosurgery outpatient clinics in 2014-15.
- Advanced Practice Pharmacy roles - Advanced practice pharmacists have highly developed and broad pharmacy expertise across many areas e.g. leadership, patient care, research, education, collaboration. A partnered pharmacist charting model developed by Alfred Health enables credentialed pharmacists to undertake medication review and chart patient medications for administration by nursing staff. Victoria is leading a rollout of partnered pharmacist charting in seven health services in 2016.
Advanced nursing roles – The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has prepared a fact sheet on advanced practice nursing. Nurses who practise at advanced level are working within a number of areas, including nurse endoscopy, nurse cystoscopy and as Nurse Practitioners. In Victoria advanced practice nurse endoscopy is being supported via the State Endoscopy Training Centre established at Austin Health, which leads, coordinates and provides training for nurse endoscopists.
