Pharmacy services self-audit tool: immunisation site readiness

Key messages

  • The self-audit tool is recommended for pharmacies in Victoria that offer immunisation services.
  • The self-audit tool is designed to assist with evaluating site compliance with the Department of Health (the department), the Victorian Pharmacy Authority (VPA), and the Australian Government guidelines.
  • The department and the VPA strongly recommends that new pharmacy immunisation service providers complete the self-audit tool to assess compliance, prior to commencing immunisation services.
  • Pharmacies that provide immunisation services are encouraged to conduct the self audit at least once a year to show continued compliance.

The department and the VPA have codesigned the self-audit tool. It aims to support pharmacies and pharmacist immunisers:

The successful completion will indicate compliance with guidelines. However services should continue to review processes, policies and service delivery as part of the quality improvement cycle. A factsheet about the tool can also be downloaded:

The self-audit tool relates specifically to site requirements. Pharmacies and pharmacist immunisers must comply with all other requirements specified by the department, the VPA and the Australian Government.

When to take the Pharmacy services self-audit tool: immunisation site readiness checklist

Before commencing immunisation services, new pharmacy immunisation service providers are encouraged to use the self-audit tool to assess compliance.

The department and the VPA recommend that pharmacies with a current government-funded vaccine account should conduct the self-audit at least once a year. Regular review of service will promote best practice and demonstrate compliance with guidelines.

Audit outcomes

Following the audit, pharmacy immunisation service providers should review findings and identify opportunities for improvement - to promote safety and compliance.

Pharmacies can document all improvement initiatives in the audit tool to show the service’s continued commitment to safety and quality.

Please keep a copy of the most recent self-audit as evidence of compliance and have it available upon request by the VPA or the department.
