The purpose of this guideline is to provide guidance about the prescription and performance of ECT in Victorian public mental health services.
The guideline also:
- summarises issues relating to human rights, consent to ECT and the role of the Mental Health Tribunal;
- highlights the importance of working collaboratively and respectfully with people, carers and parents;
- collates information about the standards set by national agencies and medical colleges regarding the physical facilities, staffing and equipment needed to deliver ECT safely;
- outlines educational, quality improvement and reporting activities that will ensure treatment standards are enhanced.
